Summer solstice 2029
Thursday 21 June 2029, 01:48 UTC
The Sun reaches its northernmost point, 23.44 degrees north of the celestial equator. In the northern hemisphere it is the longest day and the shortest night of the year, the astronomical start of summer; from now on the days grow shorter. In the southern hemisphere winter begins.
Sunrise, sunset and day length that day (local time)
| Place | Sunrise | Sunset | Day length |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | 04:42 | 21:21 | 16 h 39 min |
| Edinburgh | 04:25 | 22:03 | 17 h 37 min |
| New York | 05:24 | 20:30 | 15 h 6 min |
| Los Angeles | 05:41 | 20:07 | 14 h 26 min |
| Toronto | 05:35 | 21:02 | 15 h 27 min |
| Sydney | 06:59 | 16:54 | 9 h 54 min |
| Auckland | 07:33 | 17:11 | 9 h 38 min |
The latest sunset does not fall on the longest day: in London the Sun rises earliest on 17 June (04:42) and sets latest on 24 June (21:22). The reason is the Earth's elliptical orbit and the tilt of its axis: true noon drifts by half an hour over the year.
