What the tradition sees in it
At full moon the Sun and the Moon stand exactly opposite each other; astrology reads the tension between the two signs. Self and other: how much room do I take, how much do I leave the other?
The name
In the North American tradition, now used everywhere, it is the Harvest Moon. Being the full moon nearest the September equinox, it is the Harvest Moon: it rises soon after sunset several evenings in a row, which once gave farmers longer light for the harvest.
